WHY WORK AT PBTK?
At Piercy Bowler Taylor & Kern, we don’t offer jobs – we offer careers. Substantially all of our shareholders, principals and managers have been promoted from within. We think that is a sign we are doing something right. Such remarkable results are only possible through profitable growth, high quality control standards, and consistent on-the-job and classroom training for our associates throughout their career. To succeed as a professional and as a firm, we believe there is no substitute for technical excellence and superior service. The objective is to teach our professionals the business of public accounting, and how to become a trusted advisor to clients, not just job skills.
Here are just a few of the main reasons our employees value the PBTK work experience:
Technology
From day one, each associate is assigned either a high speed laptop or desktop computer with dual flat screen monitors depending on whether assignments are performed primarily out of or in our office. An internal team of IT professionals support our equipment and systems. Our professional staff has remote access through the internet to the PBTK network of programs and other resources.
Technical Excellence
Howard B. Levy, our Director of Technical Services, co-authored our risk-based audit approach that is also used by many firms throughout the world. Mr. Levy is a nationally and internationally recognized author, authority and consultant to other CPA firms as to accounting, auditing, and quality control matters. He literally “wrote the book” on auditing and has served on two senior standard setting committees of the AICPA. We also have an arrangement with Robert Richter, a former partner of the firm’s founders, who also “wrote the book” on SEC accounting and reporting. Mr. Richter currently serves as the editor of the SEC Accounting and Reporting Manual published by Thompson Reuters / RIA. Our tax and other practice groups have similarly invested in resources that likewise are typically not associated with a local firm and available only in larger national firms.
Experience
We practice at the highest level of our profession and our clients include publicly-traded companies, including accelerated filers, and privately-owned businesses in a variety of industries (casino resorts and other gaming related, construction and real estate, among others), governments, not-for-profit organizations, and high net worth individuals. Our associates benefit from a broad base of experiences.
Direct Access to Management
Management has an open door policy that encourages associates to ask questions and receive feedback. Principals work directly with service team members so there is always an opportunity to learn from the top. Services team members are also rotated semi-annually so associates are tutored by multiple supervisors during a typical year and are exposed to different problem solving techniques and management styles.
Competitive Salaries and Bonuses
Professionals receive competitive salaries based on individual performance and accomplishment, not on longevity with the firm. Base salaries are typically adjusted annually in June. Historically, discretionary performance bonuses have been declared each December. Employees are also eligible to participate in the firm’s profit sharing plan and 401(k) program after one year. Employees can further add to their compensation by introducing new client relationships to the firm with the employee receiving a bonus equal to 10% of all fees earned and collected in connection with the relationship for two consecutive years.
Commitment to Families
During this difficult economy when many firms are cutting benefits and salaries, PBTK continues to pay approximately 75 percent of the cost of medical insurance for the employee and their family. In a recent survey of other Las Vegas companies, only 5 percent of employers pay anything toward coverage of the employee’s family members. In addition, non-typical work schedules may be possible given individual circumstances on a case-by-case basis. We also have social events where families are invited, like group trips for skiing, college and professional sporting events, amusement parks, and “G” rated Las Vegas entertainment like Phantom of the Opera or Love.
